Many of you may know Mammoth Lakes, California as a place to travel during winter or summer for fun activities such as skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, and hiking. Although, what most people are unaware of is that the San Andres Fault Line runs right through Mammoth. Over 600 years ago this fault was created during one of the Inyo volcanic eruptions. The fault descends 60 feet and travels for hundreds of feet. As some may ponder the true safety of exploring the fault, it’s a lot safer then you may think. It has been taken over and preserved by the Inyo National Forest and U.S. Forest Service.

If you are eager to walk inside this massive fault it’s easy to get to. From The Village at Mammoth drive up the road as if you’re headed to Main Lodge. Only 1.5 miles until you see a sightseeing area. You’ll see an area to park your car, signs, and picnic tables. As you follow the signs, only a 0.3 mile walk until you reach the fault. As you start to walk inside this fault, you’ll really be able to tell how strong Earth’s forces really are.
